Back in action

You may have seen this message here for awhile:

For my three loyal readers (hi mom and dad!): two server moves, one work deadline and an overwrite (oops!) of my blog’s database have conspired to put my blog out of commission for the time being. I should have it back up some time this week.

- Ari

I’ve now recovered most of the blog. Unfortunately, all the comments (there weren’t many) were lost. Such is life.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming…

Why bother commenting in the future if comments will not be preserved for posterity? Isn’t that the point of virtually all the blog-commenting; a form of “Kilroy was here” that folks count on to remain there as eternal validation of their existence? Seeing that you can so easily let those formerly enshrined words disappear, I am in a state of existential limbo and have to rethink my approach to writing comments.

How is it that a competent human, one who has been a sysadmin, does not do backup?

Confession: I have a bunch of poorly backed up systems. Increased hardware reliability tends to make it harder to keep your guard up. Oh, well, if it ain’t mission critical it’s probably not worth worrying about.
